How to use a porcelain flower diffuser
Lift the dome, add 3 to 5 drops of essential or fragrance oil to the centre of the flower, and leave it where you want the scent. The porcelain absorbs the oil and releases it slowly for two to three days. Refresh with a few more drops when it fades.
Step by step
- Choose a spot. A desk, shelf, bedside table or windowsill out of direct heat. The scent is gentle and close range, so put it where you sit or sleep.
- Lift the dome. The Open Peony has no dome; go straight to the petals.
- Add 3 to 5 drops of oil to the centre of the flower, where the petals are thickest.
- Replace the dome if you want the scent to last longer, or leave it off for a stronger scent.
- Refresh every two to three days with another few drops.
Which oils work best?
Any essential oil or fragrance oil made for diffusers. Clear, thin oils absorb well and leave no mark. Dark or thick oils can tint pale petals over time, so test a coloured oil on the underside of a petal first.
How long does the scent last?
Usually two to three days from a few drops, depending on the oil, the warmth of the room and whether the dome is on. You can change scent whenever you like: let the old oil fade, then add the new one.
How does it compare with other diffusers?
| Porcelain flower | Reed diffuser | Electric diffuser | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | None | None | Mains or battery |
| Liquid on show | None; a few drops at a time | A bottle of oil | A water tank |
| Scent | Gentle, close range | Steady, room-filling | Strong, adjustable |
| Change scent | Any time | New bottle and reeds | Rinse the tank |
| When not scenting | Still a flower on the shelf | An empty bottle | An appliance |
Care and safety
- Dust with a soft, dry brush. Do not soak it or put it in a dishwasher.
- Porcelain is fired and hard, but the petals are thin: lift it by the base, not the flower.
- It is a decorative piece, not a toy. Keep it, and fragrance oils, out of reach of small children and pets.

A few drops give a gentle scent for about two to three days, depending on the oil and the room. Add a few more drops when it fades. It is a quiet, close-range scent for a desk, shelf or bedside rather than a whole large room.
